Portugal continues to captivate U.S.

by Perfect Portugal

An unprecedented number of Americans have zoomed in on Portugal in recent years. Over 7,000 U.S. nationals were residing in Portugal as of the end of 2021, up 45 percent from the previous year and the highest number of the past decade.

The rising trend stems from the country's famously sunny climate, excellent food and drink, relaxed pace of life and rich cultural and historical heritage. However, Portugal also stands out in areas that are fundamental to any move abroad, such as safety, affordability, and healthcare.

Often described as one of the safest and most peaceful countries in the world, Portugal ranked 6th on the Global Peace Index 2022. It is a family-friendly destination - widely considered one of the best destinations in Europe for a holiday with children - and the locals are inherently hospitable. It also has one of the hottest real estate markets in Europe, with properties - both to buy and to rent - being in high demand.

Weather-wise, its 300+ days of sunshine per year are very appealing, with hot summers and mild winters. When it comes to outlays, in Portugal, they are still relatively low. According to a May 2022 calculation by Numbeo.com, the average cost of living (excluding rent) in Portugal was over 29% lower than that of the United States.

Altogether, this makes for a very alluring package, especially when combined with the political stability, enticing tax incentives and visa possibilities, sound public health care system, reasonablypriced private health care and the high level of spoken English that Portugal offers.

Despite being a small country, Portugal has huge character and each of its regions is distinct. Some of the largest U.S. expat communities can be found in the capital, Lisbon, in Porto, the biggest city in the north, and in the Algarve, Portugal's southernmost region.

As one of the country's main gateways, the Algarve is also its premier summer and holiday destination, with an international airport and regular bus and train links to the rest of Portugal. In the Algarve itself, which is around 155 kilometres in width, top attractions are within a short drive of most main towns.

Resort living makes for an easy and secure lifestyle.
